An Award, Fundraising and the Other Award!

What a great start to June we have had, its nice to see the sun shining.  Things have been good at Stow too, so let’s get you up to date.

Blooming Great Tea Party – The Update!

Tea PartyThank you everyone who came along to our Blooming Great Tea Party on Wednesday the 5th of June.

We would like to say a special thanks to Isobel Martin who did a great job with the bric a brac, Morven for such a great cake, Helen King for her kind baking donations, Cathy Connelly for her beautiful bouquet of flowers, Jim Anderson for his kind donation to help start our tea party off, and many, many more who kindly donated and baked.

It was a great success and so good to see such a fantastic turn out of staff, students, parents, schools and other organisations.

And finally!  CONGRATULATIONS TO:

  • Ron Dillin – Winner of the sweets
  • Rose Porteous – Winner of the cake
  • Katy Barton – Winner of the teddy

Glad Cafe Awards

Glad Cafe awards 2013 - 1As part of their sponsorship deal with Glasgow based company SSK Conferences & Live Events, the Glad Cafe offered placements to six students from the Sound Production department of Creative Industries.  The students were given the opportunity to shadow the Glad Cafe’s sound man at gigs in the cafe’s dedicated venue space, and were given practical experience to validate their college course.

Glad Cafe awards 2013 - 2At the end of the year the student who had shown most promise was to receive an award from SSK at a ceremony at the Glad Cafe.

On Sunday evening two students, Ulrika Boman and Carla Feuerstein each received the Glad Cafe award.

Free Informal Guitar Lessons

Informal Guitar LessonsLuisa McMinn will give Informal tutorials available in classical guitar skills (excluding electric) on Wednesdays at lunch time 12:00  – 13:00 pm, throughout June, the first session was on Wednesday the 5th June at 12:00 noon  in room 4/13.

Those with previous experience or none at all are equally welcome, if you don’t yet have a guitar don’t despair – please let Rab Wilson know beforehand

infotracIt’s Resource of the Month time again and in June, ILS are highlighting Infotrac Newspapers.  As one of Gale’s Databases, Infotrac Newspapers is a collection of newspapers from across the UK and worldwide.  Most of the titles have archive issues dating back to the 1990s and 1980s.  Titles include:

  • The Herald
  • Guardian
  • Daily Record
  • Independent
  • Daily Telegraph
  • Scotsman
  • Evening Times
  • The Sun

To use Infotrac or any of our 39 online resources, ask in the Learning Centre about setting up an Athens account.

JISC JournalsNews just in from JISC – Periodicals Archive Online is now only available as part of JISC Journal Archives which has journals from a variety of other publishers – PAO, Brill, Institution of Civil Engineers, Institute of Physics, ProQuest, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

To access PAO:

  • Log into Athens are usual but select JISC Journal Archives instead of PAO
  • If you use the browse tab, you will see a list of collections
  • You can then select PAO if you would like to see the journals available
  • Click on a title to see the issues for a specific journal title.

You can also search by collection

  • Click on the search tab
  • You will see methods of refining your search – choose Archive
  • You can then uncheck all except PAO to search this archive only.

We would also like to remind you that all books are due back today, 7 June.  If you have forgotten, then bring them back ASAP to make sure you don’t receive an invoice.

Award Winner

Alice MuirAlice Muir won her first ever award at the Jobs and Business Glasgow Enterprise Awards, on Monday the 3rd of June.  Her award for Social Media was for using Facebook and Twitter to help promote her business.

Alice, who is 19, set up a woman’s street culture magazine, TLG, two years ago.  The magazine goes to print 4 times a year and is stocked at WH Smith, but she also has a digital app and a website which is updated daily.  Alice runs the magazine from an incubator hub within Stow College’s Shamrock Street campus.
